We will be holding a novice trial at Morse Brook Farm on July 23 and 24. There will be two one day trials. Novice-Novice, Pro-Novice and Ranch classes. Our judges are Ginny Prince and Barb Eriksson.
The sheep are a farm flock of Cheviot crosses. They are pressure sensitive and light but if your dog is right they will settle nicely.
The field is our front field which has hills and dales and slopes upwards. There is a stream in the middle but it is well marked and will be clear of tall vegetation at trial time. All handlers will be welcome and encouraged to walk the field WITH their dogs before the start of the trial so that they can understand the terrain. And handlers will be allowed to guide their dogs on the outrun if it requires a cross over the stream. The sheep are used to crossing the stream and move easily for most dogs.
Everyone entered will be expected to volunteer in some capacity. We encourage everyone to sign up for tasks they have not done before and are interested in learning about. We will have experienced people paired and there to guide you.
We are opening entries now and will close them on June 18th when we expect we will have to do a draw. People will be contacted within the week about whether they have been drawn. All others will be placed on a waitlist in the order of the draw – and will contacted if someone withdraws. We will reopen an online waitlist when the draw is completed. Once people have been drawn there will be directions for paying online or by check. The cost will be $35 per run.
Because it is July we will be starting EARLY so that the sheep are least heat stressed.
Dog friendly Hotels and Motels are available in Brattleboro, about 25 minutes away. There are also several AirBnB and other accommodations nearby. Best to check online about their most recently dog policies. The Colonial Motel on Putney has a good rep for dog friendly. There are LIMITED spots available for campers on the farm. Tent camping may be easier to accommodate. Please indicate if you want to camp on Friday or Saturday night. We are a working farm so you never know what else might be happening.
Runs are limited to about 35 per day. Because there is high demand each handler may run only 2 dogs per day. You should receive a confirmation email for each dog entered.
